ITU seeks next generation of social entrepreneurs
Would-be young innovators can win chance to pitch their ideas to industry leaders at ITU Telecom World 2012
Geneva, 1 May 2012 – ITU has launched the second edition of its Young Innovators Competition, giving young, talented social entrepreneurs the opportunity to attend its key global networking and knowledge sharing event, ITU Telecom World 2012, and the chance to win funding, mentorship and ongoing support.
Dimension Data CEO to step down
Technology services group Dimension Data, which operates across a number of key regions including Africa and Middle East, announced that current CEO for Africa and Middle East Allan Cawood will vacate his post at the end of this month.
Cawood will be replaced by Internet Solutions (IS) Managing Director Derek Wilcocks. Wilcocks’ departure from IS allowed Saki Missaikos, regional sales director at Dimension Data, to take up the reins at Internet Solutions.
Maghreb Startup Initiative Seeks Out Young Entrepreneurs in Tunisia
Yesterday, the Education for Employment (EFE) foundation and its partners announced the inauguration of the Maghreb Startup Initiative (MSI) – a regional competition to spur innovative entrepreneurship in the Maghreb.
Starting this month, teams of young entrepreneurs from Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia will have the chance to submit proposals of innovative ideas to MSI.
Safaricom: Collymore appointed to UN global board
Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, announced the appointment of Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore to the UN Global Compact Board.
The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative aimed at recognizing businesses committed to adopting sustainable and socially-responsible policies.

Microsoft Africa chairman named Mali’s interim prime minister
Cheick Modibo Diarra, Microsoft’s chairman for Africa, was named interim prime minister of Mali on Tuesday, according to a decree read out over public media.
“Interim president Dioncounda Traore names Cheick Modibo Diarra in the functions of prime minister,” read the decree nearly a month after the government of the impoverished Saharan state was overthrown in a coup.
CTA-NEPAD Photo and Essay Competitions Winners
It is with great pleasure that the New Partnership for Africa’s Development Planning and Coordinating Agency (NEPAD Agency) and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA) announce the winners of the Photo and Essay competitions that have been organized to celebrate NEPAD’s 10th Anniversary. This competition also falls in the framework of CTA activities on youth, women and ICTs.

In May this year, kLab, the open innovation space located in Kigali's ICT Park in Telecom House will open its doors to young innovators and entrepreneurs.
Recently, the firm held a competition among potential members and designers to develop its logo. Several people participated in the competition via kLab's Twitter account (@klabrw) and Eugene Rwagasore, a graphic designer with Nyaruka, emerged as the winner.
Google Geo Tools workshop set to be held in Harare
The MAPA project, an initiative to “make African conservation more accessible and visible”, will be holing a Google Geo Tools training workshop in Harare in May. The purpose of the workshop is to help conservation practitioners in Zimbabwe understand and use Google mapping tools like Google Earth, Maps and Fusion Tables to visualize and share their work online.
