Paris Mashile is back at Icasa

The former chairman of communications regulator Icasa, Paris Mashile, has been reappointed to the authority’s decision-making council with immediate effect.

News of Mashile’s return to Icasa comes as the authority names four new councillors. Other than Mashile, the new councillors are Botlenyana Mokhele, Peter Zimri and Keabetswe Modimoeng.

Etisalat Prize for Literature Announced

Poet and novelist Fiston Mwanza Mujila was on Saturday, 19th March 2016 announced as the winner of the 2015 Etisalat Prize for Literature  for his first novel, Tram 83. Originally written in French, Tram 83 was translated into English by Roland Glasser and published by Deep Vellum. 35-year-old Mujila is the first Francophone writer to win the prestigious Etisalat Prize, the first ever pan-African prize that celebrates debut fiction books by African authors.

Zambia’s BongoHive opens applications for Launch accelerator

BongoHive said Launch was a three-month accelerator programme that strategically focuses on startups that have already launched but are looking to gain further traction and scale.

The Launch programme allows startup founders to schedule weekly sessions as needed with the incubation lead, accountant and legal counsel. Applications are now open.

Ghana’s Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), which hosts one of the continent’s top technology incubators, has announced it’s accepting applications from South Africa, for the first time.

MEST’s annual year-long intensive training programme incubates young entrepreneurs with the aim of launching a software company.

The University of Nairobi’s innovation hub C4DLab has announced the launch of a bi-annual event aimed at building a community of student innovators, with the first “Young Innovators Forum” to be held in April.

C4DLab said the Young Innovators Forum is intended to spur the development of a community of student innovators, provide a platform for innovators to network, and to encourage engagement and collaboration between the university, industry and student innovators.

Dark Fibre Africa CEO to step down

Gustav Smit, founder and CEO of Dark Fibre Africa (DFA), has revealed that he will be retiring from his position. The company revealed that Smit will officially leave the DFA at the end of June, 2016.

According to the company, the board wishes to thank Smit for his leadership and the major role he has played in developing DFA into a significant participant in the telecoms industry.
