She Leads Africa’s Entrepreneur Showcase Opens for Application

She Leads Africa (SLA) has announced the second edition of its annual Entrepreneur Showcase to select the most outstanding female entrepreneurs in Africa and in the diaspora.

Application for the competition is currently open and will be on till the 30th of June, 2015. SLA says Interested startups must have at least a woman, between the ages 18-35, as one of its founders, the startup must have been in existence for less than three years and must have received less than $50,000 in funding.

SEACOM’s Willem Marais appointed CEO Liquid Telecom South Africa

Willem Marais, SEACOM’s Chief Commercial Officer and formerly in senior positions with the Siemens Group of Companies has been appointed as the Group Managing Executive for Liquid Telecom Group and as the Chief Executive Officer of Liquid Telecom South Africa.

Marais brings over 20 years’ experience in the telecoms industry and will be responsible for all Liquid Telecom’s global wholesale data business across the service provider market and will also head Liquid Telecom’s business operations in South Africa.

The Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE), has announced the dates for this year’s Kenyan Blog Awards that will culminate in a winners’ gala event on Saturday, 2nd May 2015 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi.

The annual event singles out bloggers with great creative and innovative, useful and regular content and posts.

Alcatel-Lucent appoints New MD for Ghana

In a move set to strengthen its presence in key markets in Africa, Alcatel-Lucent has appointed a new Country Senior Officer and Managing Director for Ghana.

Ramy Hashem will be in charge of managing day-to-day operations, as well as taking the lead on strategic business directions for Alcatel-Lucent in Ghana. Based in Accra, he will report to Alpin Verlet, Head of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in the West & Central Africa region.

Africa: USAID Launches Technology Competition to Combat Wildlife Crime

Today, on the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the Wildlife Crime Tech Challenge to combat illegal wildlife trade.

USAID invites organizations and individuals to submit innovative science and technology solutions to help combat the illegal trade in marine and terrestrial wildlife. Successful applicants could win up to $500,000 as well as technical assistance and networking opportunities to scale their solutions.
