South Africa: Dept takes technology to rural schools

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform recently donated Macbooks and other ICT equipment to Gaopotlake High in Mokgalwaneng as part of a project to bring the best available technology and practical skills to schools.

The school, situated about 100 km from Rustenburg in the North West, has approximately 585 learners - 290 in Grade 10, 212 in Grade 11 and 83 in Grade 12. It recieved 12 Apple Macbooks, 14 Nikon Cameras, an adapter and video camera. A total of R570 000 has been used to fund the project.

South Africa: Young people in Ha-Masia connect to the world

Masia young people in the rural area of Ha-Masia, Limpopo will soon be connected to the rest of the world through the internet.

This comes after Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti during his visit to the area announced that they are going to build a structure which will host a computer laboratory, cultural centre, community hall and a library.

"We've a good working relationship with Apple Computer and we've an agreement with them to supply computers in 13 rural schools across the country.

South African Consumer Commission to Tackle International Roaming Fees

South Africa's National Consumer Commissioner Mamodupi Mohlala has revealed that the commission has set its sights on tackling the high cost of international roaming for cellphone users.

Briefing the National Assembly's Trade and Industry Portfolio Committee, Mohlala said the commission would seek the advice of experts around international roaming fees.

The commission is currently looking into cellphone and internet service providers that provide pre-paid data but do not allow consumers to carry over unused data to the next month.

South Africa: Home Affairs Saves Billions in IT System Saga

Government has saved over R2 billion in tax payers' money and averted a protracted court case by settling a dispute over the upgrading of the Department of Home Affairs' information technology infrastructure and systems.

The department aimed to modernise its systems through the "Who Am I Online (WAIO)" project, which was to process identity documents faster.

The project, now jointly managed by the department and that of finance through the South African Revenue Service (SARS), is set for completion in the next two years.
