The countries below contain a historic archive of information on the state of the internet that is now three years old. For some countries, the information has remained largely the same whereas for others considerable change has occurred. However it can still be used to identify organisations involved in developing the internet and to understand the historic development of the Internet in Africa. For up-to-date (but "pay-for") information click here: There are special rates for students and universities.

This IDRC-supported research study looks at how complaints by African consumers in the telecoms and Internet sectors are dealt with and what input consumer organisations are able to make into policy for these sectors. It is based on a survey of 30 African countries and includes detailed case studies of Kenya, Senegal and South Africa.

GHANA APPOINTS NEW REGULATOR

The Government of Ghana has appointed Dr. Pasmour Kuranchie as Director General of the National Communications Authority(NCA) The appointment took effect ffrom 1 January, 2001 Other members of the board include Mr. John Mahama, former Minister of Communications, Chairman, Mrs Mavis Ampah, telecommunications consultant; Naval Captain Kwame Osei, representative of the Security Services, Prof Christine A Kissiedu of the University of Ghana,Mr. Gilbert Adanusah of the Ministry of Communications, Mr. Nutifafa Kuenyehia of the National Media Commission and the new Director General of NCA. Since its establishment, Mr. J.K. Gyimah has been acting as Director General.

IEEE MEMBERS OFFERED SUPPORT TO ATTEND 2001 CONFERENCE 

 Valuable financial support is now available for IEEE members (154 countries are eligible) to attend the IEEE 2001 CCA to be held in Mexico City on September 5-7, 2001. OPEN WORKSHOP ON UNIVERSAL SERVICE IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS 

A workshop will be held in Johannesburg on 29 January to consider proposals for Universal Service and Access policy for South Africa. This workshop is open to all who would like to attend, especially those involved in the telecomms industry,academics and students. Anyone interested in the process is welcome to attend. This will prepare for the national colloquium to formulate the new telecommunications policy for the country. 

Monday, 29 January, 9 am at Donald Gordon Auditorium, Public & Development Management, Wits University (next to Wits Business School). St Davids Place, Corner St Andrews Road, Parktown, Johannesburg. There is a limited travel budget for people from outside Gauteng. For assistance with travel, please contact Peter Benjamin ( peter@sn.apc.org
