The countries below contain a historic archive of information on the state of the internet that is now three years old. For some countries, the information has remained largely the same whereas for others considerable change has occurred. However it can still be used to identify organisations involved in developing the internet and to understand the historic development of the Internet in Africa. For up-to-date (but "pay-for") information click here: There are special rates for students and universities.

This IDRC-supported research study looks at how complaints by African consumers in the telecoms and Internet sectors are dealt with and what input consumer organisations are able to make into policy for these sectors. It is based on a survey of 30 African countries and includes detailed case studies of Kenya, Senegal and South Africa.

Integrated Regional Information Networks http://www.reliefweb.int/IRIN/ Of all the many news sites covering Africa, IRIN - part of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - offers truly the most comprehensive coverage. IRIN is a non-commercial venture, dependent on financing from donor governments and/or institutions. Special reports, specific news items, daily updates, weekly digests in French, English and Kiswahili are IRIN’s primary products and are currently delivered directly by e-mail to some 6,000 subscribers.

http://www.africanewsnow.com/ AfricaNewsNow delivers all the up-to-the-minute news from Africa [as well as reporting on events pertaining to the international African community] that you need to know - when you want it - electronically. Headlines from all of Africa’s major daily newspapers as well as the international press are updated every 15 minutes. There is also a searchable archives for the past month. Definitely worthy of a bookmark.

WANTED: AFRICAN WOMEN ARTISTS FOR A WEB SITE

Muriel Magenta would appreciate your help in finding women artists from Africa to include on her website entitled "The World’s Women On-Line" <http://www.asu.edu/wwol>. The site is a collection of work by professional artists working in all media. Currently, there are over 900 artists from 62 countries, however there are only 15 artists from African countries.

If you don’t know any African women artists, perhaps you do know of someone else who she could reach to assist her in her search. There is no charge to artists for being included on this site. The site is her project sponsored by Arizona State University where she is a Professor of Art. For further information, please contact Muriel at muriel.magenta@asu.edu

SOUTH AFRICA’S LEXMARK LAUNCHES ART SITE

Venture Computer, the sole southern African distributor for Lexmark International, says Lexmark has launched the Print-art.com site designed to be an internet gateway to the art world.

GLOBAL FILM SCHOOL LAUNCHED

The Australian Film Television and Radio School, Sydney, the National Film and Television School, London, and the UCLA School of Theater Film and Television, Los Angeles have affiliated to create an on-line global film school that marries three of the world’s most respected professional training institutions for film and television education with the global reach and interactive potential of the Internet. The Global Film School consortium is facilitating the convergence of the teaching philosophies, cultural sensibilities and industry relations of three prestigious schools on three continents situated in three of the worlds major centers for media production.
