The countries below contain a historic archive of information on the state of the internet that is now three years old. For some countries, the information has remained largely the same whereas for others considerable change has occurred. However it can still be used to identify organisations involved in developing the internet and to understand the historic development of the Internet in Africa. This IDRC-supported research study looks at how complaints by African consumers in the telecoms and Internet sectors are dealt with and what input consumer organisations are able to make into policy for these sectors. It is based on a survey of 30 African countries and includes detailed case studies of Kenya, Senegal and South Africa.

LINUX AFRICA 2001 (24-26 APRIL 2001, JOHANNESBURG) - CALL FOR PAPERS

The Linux Professionals Association and AITEC will be hosting a major conference and exhibition event to promote the use of Linux and Open Source. The event is aimed at the business and technical communities. It aims to showcase the state of the art in Linux and Open Source both in Southern Africa and in Africa as a whole. We invite you to submit papers and to present at the conference. Conference attendance will be free for a speaker and a speaker’s guest. Broad topics include (but are not limited to)the following topics: GNU/Linux and the Open Source Paradigm, Linux in business, Linux in education, Networking, Software development, Embedded Linux, Distributed computing and Linux and Open Source future.

All submissions should be sent in the form of abstracts (500 to 1000 words). Selected presentations will require a final paper submission for inclusion in the conference proceedings. 30 minute time slots (+ 5 minutes Q/A) will be allocated per presentation. Please include the following information with your submission:

- Title of paper as it should appear in conference materials

- Full name, affiliation, address, phone number(s), and email  address of author(s) and/or presenter(s)
