The countries below contain a historic archive of information on the state of the internet that is now three years old. For some countries, the information has remained largely the same whereas for others considerable change has occurred. However it can still be used to identify organisations involved in developing the internet and to understand the historic development of the Internet in Africa. This IDRC-supported research study looks at how complaints by African consumers in the telecoms and Internet sectors are dealt with and what input consumer organisations are able to make into policy for these sectors. It is based on a survey of 30 African countries and includes detailed case studies of Kenya, Senegal and South Africa.

* Namibia’s President Sam Nujoma officially inaugurated the first ever telephone services in the Tsumkwe constituency formerly known as Bushmanland, during a ceremony held at Tsumkwe some 300km east of Grootfontein. The San people, once described by an American academic expert as "off the information highway", played host to a gathering that included local Chiefs John Arnold, Bobo and Sara Sungu as well as representatives of the companies that completed the contract. * Responding to a ministerial speech at the launch of the Science Students Association Week and Science Fair of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the President of the Association, George Eduah Beesi, called on the government to provide adequate computers for the institution and to also help increase funding for the Computer Science and Mathematical departments.
