The countries below contain a historic archive of information on the state of the internet that is now three years old. For some countries, the information has remained largely the same whereas for others considerable change has occurred. However it can still be used to identify organisations involved in developing the internet and to understand the historic development of the Internet in Africa. This IDRC-supported research study looks at how complaints by African consumers in the telecoms and Internet sectors are dealt with and what input consumer organisations are able to make into policy for these sectors. It is based on a survey of 30 African countries and includes detailed case studies of Kenya, Senegal and South Africa.

TELKOM SA ANNOUNCES RESULTS

Telkom, the South African full service telecommunications provider with an exclusive wire-line licence, and which also has a 50% holding in the country’s largest mobile operator, Vodacom, announces a significant increase in Group revenues and EBITDA for the year ended 31 March and major progress in its ongoing efficiency progamme. Highlights include: Group revenue up by 15% to R32.0 billion; company revenue per line up 22% to R5,335 and group operating costs increased by 14% to R27.3 billion.

South Africas IT giant, Dimension Data (Didata), took a hammering on the financial markets on, as fear set in about the company’s prospects in the face of a global recession.

Amid the gloom pervading the information technology sector, it will come as a pleasant surprise to many that an IT group, Comparex, has qualified as the first SA Top Company in the FM’s flagship Top Companies 2001 publication.

GLOTEC MAKES TWO NEW ACQUISITIONS

Global Technology (Glotec) has acquired Investment Technology Solutions (ITS) and the minority shareholdings in Capacity Building Services (CBS) and Xpert Risk Management. Glotec acquired 51% shareholdings in both CBS and Xpert in November 1998.The new minority buyouts will be settled with Glotec shares at a purchase consideration of R5 million each.
