The countries below contain a historic archive of information on the state of the internet that is now three years old. For some countries, the information has remained largely the same whereas for others considerable change has occurred. However it can still be used to identify organisations involved in developing the internet and to understand the historic development of the Internet in Africa. For up-to-date (but "pay-for") information click here: There are special rates for students and universities.

This IDRC-supported research study looks at how complaints by African consumers in the telecoms and Internet sectors are dealt with and what input consumer organisations are able to make into policy for these sectors. It is based on a survey of 30 African countries and includes detailed case studies of Kenya, Senegal and South Africa.

* Malawi’s Information Minister Clement Stambuli is in hot water. The state telco MTL put out to tender the payphones contract for the country. And guess who won it. Yes, you guessed. Clement Stambouli and MTL’s own top management officials. The tendering process is being reviewed, according to Stambuli because "it was not done to the expectation of the media." The contract has been nullified and the Country’s Anti-Corruption Bureau is investigating.

* IBM SA has brought on board Informix’s former South African country general manager, Simon Jeggo, to head up the data management division within its software group.

* Peter Van Roste, President EuroISPA will make a presentation on how EuroISPA developed and the problems it encountered on the second day of the ACT 2001 conference.

* Saturday July 28th, 2001 will see the first Ghana Web Awards at the Accra International Conference Centre. The Ghana Web Awards is the brainchild of Excellence Awards Company and is managed by Deloitte and Touche. National Planning committee member, Akwetey Ofori said that this unique awards event had become necessary because the internet has become an increasingly important vehicle, resource and tool for information transfer. The organisers say that there are now over 2000 Ghanaian web sites.

* Congratulations to 20 year old Nigerian Helen Oluwatosin Otitoju who has become the first student in Howard University’s (Washington, USA) 134 year history to obtain The Poincare Fellowship, a graduate study programme at the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH).

* Science and Technology Minister Professor Turner Isoun has stressed the need for the government and wealthy Nigerians to invest in the future of children and youths, especially in the area of Information Technology.
