The countries below contain a historic archive of information on the state of the internet that is now three years old. For some countries, the information has remained largely the same whereas for others considerable change has occurred. However it can still be used to identify organisations involved in developing the internet and to understand the historic development of the Internet in Africa. AFRICA WEB SITE ACCOMPANIES A US PBS TV SERIES ON AFRICA

Detailed profiles of societies and landscapes in 43 countries; interactive games and other educational features on African history and culture; photos essays on serious issues that threaten the African Renaissance; e-mail dialogues among African children and kids worldwide - these are only some of the components of a new Africa Web site, launching Monday, August 27th at <www.pbs.org/africa>.

This site is the companion to AFRICA, a landmark, eight-part PBS series produced by Thirteen/WNET New York (producers of Nature) and National Geographic Television. The site will remain online for five years, offering adults and children a vivid, comprehensive portrait of this little-understood continent. The site was created by Thirteen’s Interactive & Broadband Unit. The senior producer is Elizabeth Owen who, when she was at Time magazine, produced the Person of the Century and Visions of the 21st Century Web sites.

The site and the series are a welcome departure from African stereotypes. Both ventures tell Africa’s story through the eyes of Africans - rural and urban, disadvantaged and thriving - celebrating the differences among African cultures; explaining how people’s lives are influenced by their lands and environmental changes; and revealing the diversity and richness of African history.

The site is planned as an extension of the broadcast. In its broad exploration of the Sahara, Ethiopian Highlands, Great Lakes, Swahili Coast, Sahel, Rainforest, and Southern Africa, the site provides users with a wealth of opportunties to learn more about the issues and characters featured in the series, as well as about many other aspects of the diverse and complex African continent.

The Africa Web site is sponsored by the series’ producers and underwriters, including the Park Foundation, Canon U.S.A., Inc., Ford Motor Company, and TIAA-CREF - but except for their logos on the homepage, there is no advertising.
