Kenya : Kiss TV and Classic TV seize significant audience share

Kenya’s Radio Africa Group has expanded and introduced 2 new television stations into the market in early August and they are expected to bring a whole new look to the television industry.

It has conducted a dip stick survey two weeks after the launch is meant to measure the uptake of the two stations. The sample was only 240 but it may be a portent of how the fight for television audiences in Kenya will develop.

As might be expected, Kiss TV has found a young audience between 18-29. Among the 18-24 age group 66% had viewed it in the previous week and in the 25-29 age group 53% had viewed it in the previous week.

By contrast, Classic TV’s audience is in the slightly older 30-44 age group. Among the 30-34 age group 51% had viewed it in the previous week and in the 35-44 age group 42% had viewed it in the previous week.

Overall the survey shows that the three main TV players in the market remain Citizen, KTN and NTV. But on the basis of this survey, the two new TV stations are attracting more audience than state broadcaster KBC does overall.
