Terrence Howard to star as Nelson Mendela
Cape Film Commission announced on 10th. May 2010 that Terrence Howard, Academy Award nominated actor, will star in the role of Nelson Mandela joining Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, who will portray Winnie, the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela in the film "Winnie".
Renowned filmmaker, Darrell James Roodt (Yesterday, Cry, The Beloved Country, Sarafina!) will direct the South Africa/Canada co-production. The announcement was made jointly by producers Andre Pieterse of Ma-Afrika Films and Michael Mosca of Equinoxe Films, Canada.
Said Roodt: "Terrence Howard is one of the most gifted and versatile actors in the world today. It is going to be an absolute privilege to watch him bring to life Nelson Mandela, one of the most formidable individuals in modern history."
An accomplished Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe nominated actor for his work in Hustle and Flow, Terrence Howard also received a National Board Review Award for Best Breakthrough Performance in the Academy Award winning Best Picture Crash. Some of his other film credits include Ray, Dead Presidents, Mr. Holland`s Opus, and Iron Man.
Jennifer Hudson says, "I was compelled and moved by the script. Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I`m honoured to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told."
Penned by Andre Pieterse and Darrell James Roodt, the screenplay is based on the book Winnie Mandela: A Life by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob, a former journalist.
Principal Photography on "Winnie" will commence on May 31st, 2010 and continue for 10 weeks on location in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Transkei Mountains (birthplace of Winnie) and Robben Island - where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years incarcerated before becoming his country`s first Black president.
