AFRINIC SETS UP SHOP IN MAURITIUS

AfriNIC opened its offices in the Mauritius Cyber-Tower during the conference. It has been given a one year lease by Cyber-Tower Parks of Mauritius, a government-operated corporation. AfriNIC’s administrative staff will be based here.

AfriNIC has submitted its application to ICANN to be recognised as the fifth Regional Internet Registry. This is a major step in the AfriNIC process. Once recognised AfriNIC will be responsible for managing internet number resources (IPV4, IPV6 and Autonomous System Numbers) throughout Africa and the Indian Ocean.

The AfriNIC application was strongly supported by the Number Resource Organisation (www.nro.net), the representative organisation of the four Regional Internet Registries already operating. In a statement of support for AfriNIC, NRO encouraged the ICANN board to provide provisional recognition for AfriNIC as soon as possible.
