Tanzania: Microsoft Kiswahili Interface Pack Launched
Kiswahili speakers can now use Microsoft windows 7 in their language thanks to Windows 7 Kiswahili interface pack launched this week in Dar es Salaam.The Windows 7 users may switch anytime to any language of their preference including Kiswahili among other international and local languages.
The official launch of the windows 7 Kiswahili interface pack was graced by President Jakaya Kikwete at a cocktail at a city hotel. According to the Microsoft General Manager for East and Southern Africa Louis Otieno, the Microsoft Kiswahili interface pack is part of the company's local language programme in the region."The availability of windows 7 in Kiswahili is a remarkable step towards eliminating language barrier to technology access," said Mr Otieno.
President Jakaya Kikwete welcomed the move by Microsoft Corporation and promised to create more conducive environment to attract more technological investment in the country."The government is in its bid to cover all Tanzanian regions with fibre optic network by the end of this year. Therefore more people will have access to communication technology and as you all know that Kiswahili is main medium of communication in our country," he said.
He also urged the minister for science, communication and technology Prof Makame Mbarawa who also attended the event to speed up in collaboration and implementation of technology projects initiated by Microsoft Corporation.
