Deadline for the switchover from analogue to digital broadcasting in the UHF Band remains 17 June 2015
Despite reports in the Kenyan media to the contrary, the deadline for the switchover from analogue to digital broadcasting in the UHF Band remains 17 June 2015, and this includes a list of 30 African nations. There has been no extension for this deadline has been granted to any country. There is a separate deadline for 33 countries in Africa for the transition in the VHF Bands set for 17 June 2020, but that should not be confused with the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.
The decision on the 2015 deadline was taken on 16 June 2006, at the conclusion of the Regional Radiocommunication Conference (RRC-06) in Geneva. A Regional Agreement was signed by ITU Member States of Region 1 and the Islamic Republic of Iran for planning of the digital terrestrial broadcasting service, in the frequency bands 174-230 MHz and 470-862 MHz, heralding the development of ‘all-digital’ terrestrial broadcast services for sound and television.
