Algerie Telecom launched an outdoor Wi-Fi service on 20 April as it switched on a hotspot at the central post office square in Algiers. The new pay service is delivered with the support of Tunisian tech group Telnet, with which it signed a framework deal in early 2014 for to deliver outdoor Wi-Fi throughout Algeria. Telenet's DataBox subsidiary DataBox formed DB Algeria. Telenet writes that the network uses so-called "Wi-Ci" technology that offers an extended reach of 2.7 km, compared to several dozen meters for Wi-Fi. Algerie Telecom's service offers broadband reception in public areas for any Wi-Fi terminal, with several tariffs available.
