MTN Launches an M2M SIM Card & IoT Platform in South Africa

Just a day after Samsung announced its IoT platform dubbed Artik, MTN has announced an Internet of Things (IoT) platform and machine to machine (M2M) SIM card in a move to tap into the growing IoT industry.

Now live in South Africa, MTN will launch the platform in Nigeria, then Kenya and then across its other Africa markets this year and will negotiate fare rates with telcos in markets it has no presence. The IoT plaform will let MTN uses link to devices and systems to exchange information and carry out their perform activities intelligently regardless of theri geographic locations.

The new platform aims to reduce customers reliance on voice and data traffic on its existing network

Mteto Nyati, MTN Group Chief Enterprise Officer said:  “Through this new platform we have addressed this problem and are giving our customers a truly dedicated network. We will also be offering new applications to our customers. We are going to start having solutions that talk to the challenges of our country.”

Nyati also said MTN wants to work with startups to build applications on the platform. The firm has already invited developers to its inaugural MTN Mind-2-Machine challenge.
