Viacom’s video-on-demand service Play Plex is coming to South Africa

You can clearly never have too many Netflix-style video on demand services: production giant Viacom has just announced that it’s launching an app called Play Plex, and that it’s coming to South Africa.

Streaming video content through internet-connected devices is taking the international market by storm, including South Africa, and 2015 has already seen a number of streaming services launch. South Africans already have access to Vidi, AMTN’s Front Row and, most recently, Naspers’ ShowMax, and there’s plenty of ways of getting international subscriptions if you know how.

Viacom Play Plex is a suite of mobile TV apps that will give users access to all of Viacom’s international television brands like Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Channel, Spike and BET. That means it’ll be home to Spongebob Squarepants, Catfish and more. And through Comedy Central, it may also mean that The Daily Show with Trevor Noah will be on your phone or tablet as soon as it’s aired.

The service will go live in the fourth quarter of this year.

“Viacom is exploring a number of different distribution options for Viacom Play Plex, with the suite of apps being offered on both a collective and standalone basis to existing pay TV partners in every territory to integrate into their TV Everywhere services where available,” the network said in a media statement.

Each branded Play app will be localised for the country it is available in, both in terms of language and available content. Viacom did not say in the release what South Africa-specific content will be on offer, however, just that that the apps would carry Viacom’s shows “…as well as locally-produced content”.

Bob Bakish, president and CEO of Viacom International Media Networks explained that the Plex Play app offers new distribution opportunities, “…particularly in the fast-growing mobile TV sector, and, ultimately, positions us to succeed in a world of more personalised entertainment services and greater consumer choice.”
