Hot on the heels of Netflix announcing its arrival on our shores, Google has announced that Google Play Movies is now available in South Africa.

According to Google, you will be able to stream movies to watch instantly on your tablet, phone and laptop (via a browser) or download the movie to watch offline. Rented movies have an expiration date, purchased movies do not.

Other African countries that now have access to Google Play Movies include Angola, Botswana, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mali, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

However, South Africans will have to wait for their favourite TV shows to be added to the mix. According to Google, TV series are currently only available to users in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US.

Last month, Netflix, the world's largest streaming video provider finally extended its service to South Africa. The launch however was bittersweet, as it emerged that certain hit shows such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, would not be available.

Other streaming services available in South Africa include ShowMax, Hong Kong service ONTAPtv.com and MTN's VU.
