Nigeria: FG Launches Freedom of Information Web Platform
The Federal Government on Wednesday launched a re-designed Bureau of Public Service reform (BPSR) website with a freedom of information portal to receive FOI requests.
Director General of BPSR, Dr Joe Abah, during the launch in Abuja said they are the first public institution in Nigeria to have an electronic platform for receiving freedom of information requests.
"We are proud to be the first government agency in Nigeria to have an electronic platform (www.bpsr.gov.ng) for receiving Freedom of Information requests," he said.
He added that initiating reforms and introducing innovations is one of the key functions of BPRS.
The initiative according to Abah was supported by the Mac Arthur Foundation as part of an on- going partnership with Right to Know (R2K) geared towards utilizing information technology for information disclosure both proactively as well as on demand.
The website will allow members of the public to submit real time online FOI requests and receive feedback, Abah stated.
While handing over the redesigned website to BPSR, R2K's Coordinator, Ene Nwankpa, said BPSR as the major government institution that drives reforms among public institutions in Nigeria has demonstrated an exemplary and bold approach.
He further added that "nothing negative occurs when a public institution opens up its operations to public access and scrutiny. This ingenuity should be followed by all public institutions in Nigeria."
