Last Wednesday, several companies and parastatals were recognised for their use of social media during the annual Social Media Awards.

The awards, according to organisers, seek to reward those individuals and organisations that are making a concerted effort to harness the power of social media to engage and build communities online. "From avid face-bookers to twitter personalities and passionate bloggers," the organisers say.

The Social Media Awards, now in its third year running had MTN as the biggest winner for the evening with three awards - Best Brand, Best in Technology and Innovation and Best Mobile App.

Both Coca Cola and Airtel Uganda walked away with two awards each with the former winning Best moving consumer goods brand - and Best Integrated Campaign while Airtel Uganda received Best Social Good campaign and Customer Care across Social Media.

NTV Uganda was Best Media/News Outlet while Campusbee is this year's Best Blog.

National Water and Sewerage Corporation was voted the Best Use of Social Media by a state/individual, The Pearl Guide Magazine took Best Social Media for Small Business and Centenary Bank emerged as the Best Financial Brand on Social Media.

Social Media has indeed worked for Ann Kansiime in not only making her a household name in Uganda's comedy industry but also making her a winner in this year's SMA for the You-tube campaign/Best video.

The awards - organised by Seanicce Kacungira (pictured) - started with a debate on whether government was in order to block social media on February 18 and whether the government should pass laws that regulate social media before the awarding ceremony started.
