Kenya will host the Social Media Week for the first time in September, an event expected to enlighten entrepreneurs and firms on how they can use technology and media platforms to transform their businesses.

Rita Gitobu-Njuguna of Go Gaga Experiential, Kenya franchise holders of the event, Wednesday said Social Media Week would drive conversation on the role of ICT in the country’s economic future.

“We will bring together industry stakeholders and leaders to share the best ideas, innovations and insights into how social media and technology are changing businesses across the globe,” she said.

The Social Media Week is a global event organised four times a year in February, June, September and November to showcase innovations and provide insights into how social media and technology are changing businesses and cultures globally.

Nairobi will join London, Rome, Sao Paulo, Miami and Mumbai which will also be running similar events concurrently.

The events will be held concurrently at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre as well as Strathmore’s innovation hub iLab Africa.

ICT secretary Dr Katherine Getao noted that social media provides an opportunity to create job opportunities for tech savvy, unemployed youth.

“It works both ways, as international companies try to market their goods to the millions of Kenyans online businesses locally should also be looking at how to globalise their businesses. We need a conversation from the academia and businesses on what skills need to be imparted and how best the government can support this,” she said.
