The successful rollout of digital services – including Wi-Fi hotspots and fibre infrastructure - across Gauteng's Ekurhuleni Metropolitan municipality has earned the government institution recognition at the Sita GovTech 2016 conference in Johannesburg.

Lydia Ntlhophi, Divisional Head, Business Relations Management, Ekurhuleni Municipality, has confirmed that the Municipality is the recipient of an award in the best ICT Service Delivery and Transformation Award Local Government category.

Ntlhophi added that the recognition was grounded in a partnership established with strategic partner Huawei Technologies which began in 2013, after the ICT firm won the services contract.

"The contract was for two things ... one being the Wi-Fi AP, the application points to implement the free Wi-Fi for the citizens, as well as converged infrastructure... that is the platform where we host solutions and services," said Ntlhophi.

She added that the services include 2000 hotspots spread across public libraries and previously disadvantaged areas that are under-served in terms of internet access.

The connectivity project is based on fibre installations, integration and data exchange between various service delivery institutions. Read the full story on ITWeb here:
