About 26 districts are set to get official websites under the Rural Communication Development Programme. This programme is the brainchild of Uganda Communications Commission [UCC]. The new websites and Internet cafes are set to be launched in Mbale on July 25. Uganda Home Pages Limited won the contract to design and is also hosting the websites.

According to the UCC Corporate Affairs Officer M. Fred Otunnu Okot, the remaining 30 districts would get their websites in the course of the year. Okot told The Monitor that the UCC would fund the websites for one year before the districts start financing them. The websites, he said, would help the districts market themselves.

"Our challenge to the districts is to continuously provide as much information as they can. This information is aimed at selling their districts to potential development partners," he said. The Minister of State for Communications Mr Michael Werikhe will officiate at the official inauguration of the websites.
