Africa: SABC Launches News Agency


In order to firmly stamp its presence on the national and international market, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has launched its own news agency. "As Africa's leading news-gathering and packaging organisation, SABC News has immediate access, on a daily basis, to a vast amount of exclusive footage, both video and audio.

"With a strong presence across South Africa, the rest of the continent and internationally, we are in the fortunate position to be able to gather and deliver unique content about Africa and the world," said SABC Acting Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Gab Mampone. He added that this news would have a strong African flavour and perspective.

SABC News has an extensive network of news bureaus situated across the globe in Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Senegal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Washington, New York, London, Brussels, Brazil, China and Jamaica enabling it to provide comprehensive coverage on world events.

Some of the services that are included in the new SABC News Agency are a 24-hour SABC News International channel, tailor-made production of news bulletins and current affairs programming, "on the scene" live content directly to broadcasters and media organisations, and direct selling of SABC Radio and Television news bulletins.

"As a public broadcaster, we have a significant role to play in empowering all citizens with quality information. The values on which we would like to deliver this information is by conversation and partnerships, through the restoration of human dignity, and through the building of a common future.

"According to a recent study conducted by the Human Science Research Council (HSRC), 72 percent of South Africans trust the SABC, and we are ranked only second to religious institutions," said the GCEO.
