Broadcast In Brief


- South Africa’s parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications will vote on amendments to the Broadcasting Act. The ruling party is expected to submit its latest proposals on the amendments. The Draft Committee Bill seeks to amend the Broadcasting Act.The purpose of the Bill is to provide for the removal of a member of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) by the appointing body on the recommendation of Parliament's National Assembly.The Bill will also look at the dissolution of the SABC Board. Civil Society submitted proposals last week.

- Malawi's top bank National Bank of Malawi (NBM) in partnership with GTV has agreed to offer loans to customers who would like to acquire the pay-TV company’s set-top box.

- Audio-visual professionals in Mali have created their own union, Syndicat national des professionnels des métiers de l'image au Mali (SYNAPROMIM).

- The Nigerian Federal Government has set 31 December, 2012 as switchover date for the transition of analogue to digital Television Broadcasting, three years ahead of the International Telephone Union's (ITU), of which Nigeria is a member and signatory, deadline of 2015 (UHF) and 2020 (VHF) for full transition worldwide.
