Zimbabwe: ZWTube Improves Online Broadcasting

Technology & Convergence

THE online video channel, ZWTube.com has become one of the best broadcasting platforms online for Zimbabwe.

The channel which was launched a month ago now boasts over 200 videos on Zimbabwe only including Zimbabwe Tourism Authority videos, Zimbabwe Rugby and various celebrity interviews including interviews with Tichafa 'Tich Mataz' Matambanadzo and many other Zimbabwean celebrities. Other videos of interest including a showcase of R&B star, Joe Thomas's visit to Zimbabwe (courtesy of Showman Tours), promo videos by Zimsun, the Jibilika Urban Dance Festival, tours of Great Zimbabwe, Matopos, and Victoria Falls, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai's recent visit to Belfast and many other videos.

Other videos that will be showing soon include the just ended Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, Miss Zimbabwe, HIFA and many others.

The concept which is meant to promote the image of Zimbabwe is built along the lines of YouTube. Zimbabwean companies can freely submit their videos and showcase their companies. Individuals can also create own channels where they can upload videos free of charge and exchange with other members.

The channel now boasts over 1 000 members since the launch last month in April, which is a remarkable achievement; considering that many of them already had video accounts with the likes of YouTube and Brightcove.

The company directors are currently in negotiations with various companies in Zimbabwe and the world over to create business channels for them, where they can showcase their products and services.

"We aim to show the splendid beauty that Zimbabwe has to the world. The negative publicity that Zimbabwe has should be countered. Zimbabwe is still a very safe destination for tourists and has superb tourism facilities; and a vibrant theatre and arts sector. The world needs to know that there's more to Zimbabwe than just the politics," said one of the directors of the video channel.

"There are many tourists who still visit the Victoria Falls and Great Zimbabwe. There is still white water rafting on the Zambezi and safari tours. Many people think Zimbabwe has shut down, and this is not true. We have to show the world that people are still going to Zimbabwe despite the security alerts that are being issued the world over. When was the last time you heard a tourist killed in Zimbabwe?"

ZWTube is currently working with Zimbabwean and other businesses in the region setting up video channels gearing up for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa and to promote tourism and business in the region.

The channel is being tested against the major players in the business and still in beta form. Visitors are encouraged to set up free accounts and send all comments to the management to improve this Zimbabwean platform.
