Broadcast In Brief

- Last month Soweto TV received its broadcasting licence from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and was given the go ahead to broadcast for another year from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2009.For the first time Soweto TV featured on AMPS 2008A with a total viewership of 347 000. Qualitative research commissioned earlier this year revealed that Ezomoya and Dlala Ngeringas were the two top shows. Currently, Soweto TV is working on a new programme line-up that will bring more entertainment and educational/informative shows to the existing schedule. It also highlighted the fact that it needed more lifestyle/entertainment based programming that has some relevance to our broadcast footprint, the greater Gauteng region. Soweto TV is currently available “free-to-air” on the Bop TV frequency and on the DSTV bouquet on channel 150.

- Nigeria’s University of Ibadan has floated a community radio station as part of efforts to actualise its ICT-driven programme delivery in line with the operation of similar programmes in the developed countries of the world.
