In Brief:

Regulation & Policy

- Start of July 2010, Reporters Without Borders and Journalist in Danger (JED), its partner organisation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, are alarmed about the situation of press freedom in this country on the eve of the 50th anniversary of its independence. As many foreign leaders arrive in Kinshasa for tomorrow’s celebrations, the two organisations call on the Congolese authorities and the international community to work together to improve the climate for journalists.

- In a separate note, RWB in Rwanda have called upon the European Union and other donors to suspend financial support towards next month's general elections citing crackdown on media freedom in the country.

- In Rwanda, Kigali: The national media regulatory body, the Media High Council (MHC), has vowed to crack down on all outlets that do not meet requirements set by the new media law. The MHC released a list on July 29, 2010 of accredited media outlets which submitted complete requirements for re-registration as required by the law. The list is made up of 19 electronic media (TV and Radio) and 22 newspapers.
