Vuzu and Supersport International channels selected for Hot Bird TV Awards 2010


On 28 September 2010, the shortlist of channels nominated for the Hot Bird TV Awards 2010 was finalised and released.
With a record number of over 150 channels entered from 21 countries, this year’s event shows the exceptional vigour and commitment of broadcasters to addressing the specific interests and passions of the viewing public. The only African channels short-listed are Vuzu and Supersport International from South Africa.

Vuzu is a youth channel aimed at 18 – 24 year olds from all over the continent of Africa brought by M-Net. This innovative channel, launched on 01 July 2009, is geared at increasing interactivity through locally produced content which will also be available online. It provides a space where people can Meet, Share and Play. The channel, number 123 on the DStv network, provides a continental platform for young people to have access to relevant entertainment on their phones, PCs and television sets.

M-Net prides itself on providing premium international and local entertainment to its viewers and Vuzu is a reputable extension of this legacy. Supported by a community platform integrated to television, Vuzu taps into 21st century global youth trends featuring international, first and exclusive programming alongside locally produced gaming, entertainment and extreme sport.

Vuzu’s viewer-centric programming mix includes international hit shows like Gossip Girl, Entourage, The Simpsons, Kyle XY, South Park as well as new locally produced shows like The Verge – a show devoted to all things high-tech and gaming; V Entertainment – a daily round up of the hottest local and international celeb gossip; Scar Tissue - which consists of various stunts performed by a professional crew across a wide spectrum of everyday situations, to name a few.

Touch TV is the interactive show which allows users to interact with television by using message2Tv, SMS, MMS and twitter to get their comments, messages and pictures shown on air.

Along with MultiChoice Africa and M-Net, SuperSport is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Naspers' MIH Holdings, which is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, NASDAQ and the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. On a smaller scale, SuperSport International Holdings Ltd is made up of a number of sports teams and organisations.

The company produces nine television channels for the sporting enthusiast in sub-Saharan Africa. The programming covers most popular sports such as football, rugby, cricket, golf, and tennis - but also goes deeper, covering more than 100 types of sports. Three SuperSport channels are on around the clock, while others feature highlights, interactive programming, or special events broadcasts.
