MTG rolls out African nets, unveils 'TV Everywhere'

Broadcast

European broadcast giant Modern Times Group (MTG) is expanding the presence of its Viasat pay-TV channels in Africa from the end of this month. MTG will debut four channels - Viasat History, Viasat Nature, Viasat Explorer and Viasat Crime - to satellite subscribers in Nigeria and cable customers in Kenya from February 28.

The channels are localised versions of Viasat Broadcasting's existing thematic documentary channels. Three are currently available in 29 countries across Northern, Central and Eastern Europe.

While MTG already has a free-TV operation in Ghana in West Africa, this is the company's first move into the pay sector in the Sub-Saharan region, where it is now focusing more effort, as shown earlier this month when it signed a production pact covering the area with John de Mol's Talpa.

"Our intention is to make our channels as broadly available as possible in these rapidly developing TV markets and economies," said MTG president and CEO Hans-Holger Albrecht.
