EACA Conference
Conference Date: 7 – 9 SEPTEMBER 2011

Conference Theme
The role communication theory and research in Africa’s development in the 21st Century: Prospects and challenges.
Following an initiative by a number of colleagues who met in Nairobi, Kenya, in May last year (2010), the East Africa Communication Association (EACA) has finally been formed. The interim executive is planning for the inaugural conference cum AGM to be held in Nairobi from 7 to 9 September 2011. The conference will focus on the possibilities and challenges that communication theory and research hold for the social, political and economic development of African countries in the 21st Century with special reference to the East African region. Since this is the very first such conference in the region and to afford as many people the opportunity to participate, abstracts are being invited for papers focusing on, but not limited to, the following areas:

1. The role of media and communication in research and knowledge dissemination for social, political and economic development. This would include academic publishing; popular media; folk and traditional media; advocacy and policy engagement; book publishing; etc.
2. The changing face of journalism practice in the 21st century Africa. Papers should focus on the contribution of theory and research to journalism training and practice in an environment characterized by changes in political dynamics, policy and regulation, technology, professional ideology, newsroom practices, growth in civic journalism and societal needs in matters of culture, politics and development.
3. Communication theory and research for social change. Here papers should dwell on social change generally and specifically on how media and communication theory and research can contribute to human development in the areas of education, health, agriculture, social justice, cultural development and the environment. Of particular interest will be the application and integration of electronic and mobile technologies in social change efforts.
4. The role of corporate and organizational communication theory and research in fostering good business practices and general socio-economic development; including good corporate citizenship and corporate social responsibility. Papers may focus on the role of corporate communication and public relations theory and research in the social change issues mentioned in 3 above.
5. The role of media and communication in governance and the political process. Governance topics may include representation, accountability, corruption, transparency and eGovernment. Political process topics may include elections and political discourse. Of particular importance to the region would be how media and communication can contribute to the reduction of violent conflicts by promoting peace and understanding among communities within countries and at the regional level.
6. The role of media and communication in supporting the East African Community Project. Papers will focus on issues related to the social, political and economic initiatives and challenges facing the drive toward the integration of the East African countries.
