Kampala, a city that takes pride in being alive with night entertainment, has now got an extra social event to add to its calendar. Last Friday, Radio and TV Academy (RTV) launched the Radio and TV Personalities' awards at Garden City Rooftop, with a promise of transparency and good entertainment.

Veteran broadcasters like Hajj Abdul Nsereko, Andrew Patrick Luwandagga, Drake Ssekebba and Andrew Benon Kibuuka, who co-emceed with Laila Kalanzi, graced the event.

Yusuf Lule, the academy chairman, said the awards will recognize the best radio and TV programming and presentation so as to encourage and enhance the quality and standards of Uganda's broadcast media.

"We are committed to extending education and understanding of the media among policymakers, business community, listeners and all those who aspire to work in radio and TV. We hope to achieve our goal through networking at social events and a quarterly newsletter," said Lule.

The awards will have different categories such as Hall of Fame, Outstanding Community Programme, Lifetime Achievement and best DJ; and the votes from listeners and viewers will be overseen by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Abdul Nsereko, (the father of Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko) amused guests when he said the last time he attended a social event was in 1969, when Cecilia Ogwal was crowned Miss Uganda at Apollo Hotel [now Sheraton hotel]. He also requested journalists to live an exemplary life as many people regard them highly.
