- Start of July 2012, the new Minister of Culture and Tourism, Youssou Ndour said that "Youtube can be a solution to fight against piracy" and called on artists, producers and designers to increase their online presence, because their future is there. "More than three billion hours of video are watched on YouTube each month, demonstrating the potential for creators in Senegal," he said.
- On 18 July 2012 global icon and former South African president Nelson Mandela (Madiba) turns 94 years old. Film producer Anant Singh, currently in production on the only official film based on Mandela’s autobiography, Long Walk To Freedom, together with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, has announced the production’s involvement in perpetuating the legacy of Madiba and Mandela Day.
- South African films are set to take the centre stage at this year’s Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), which runs from 19 to 29 July, with a total of 66 local films to be screened.
