StarTimes’ local content aimed to reshape pay TV in Nigeria

As Nigeria’s pay television (TV) market is poised for further competition by players in the industry, StarTimes, pioneer in Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) solution in China and Africa, has made bold its resolve to reshape pay TV in the country.

This it intends doing by providing wider platform and opportunity for local content providers as well as bridge the gap between the rich and the indigent in terms of access to information, education and entertainment, and thereby increasing the interest of other potential investors in various sectors of the country.

Currently, operational in eight Nigerian cities - Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Port-Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Benin City and Onitsha - and more expansion plan in few months to come, StarTimes has rolled out plans to celebrate its over 750, 000 subscribers with its N2 million second anniversary promo, and other consolation prizes such as LCD TV, CRT TV, StarTimes Mobile TV, StarTimes GPS Car TV, etc.

Making this known to BusinessDay in Lagos, Celestine Umeibe, PR/content manager, StarTimes, Nigeria, disclosed that the organisation’s second anniversary promo, which started July 16 and would run till September 8, 2012, was a testimony of the company’s achievement, especially advancing Nigeria to the accomplishment of total digital broadcast migration via rapid expansion and contributing to national growth and development by creating job opportunities for Nigerians.

While looking forward to Nigeria’s successful migration from analogue broadcasting to digital broadcasting by 2015, Umeibe explained that “the promo is a reward programme mapped out to celebrate StarTimes two years of successful DTT operations and to reward loyal subscribers for their patronage in the country.

According to him, “To qualify for the raffle draw to win the national grand prize of N2 million and/or other regional prizes, new subscribers are expected to visit any StarTimes outlet, buy and activate any StarTimes product, like decoder, LCD/CRT TV, and other products - only available in Abuja and Lagos- to qualify instantly. New subscribers also stand a chance to win weekly prizes at the regional levels, such as a star prize of N100, 000 and other consolation prizes.”
