Technology & Convergence

Seven regions in Tanzania mainland have adopted digital television broadcasting through the Star Times, the company announced in Dar es Salaam.

The Star Times Sales Manager,  David Kisaka, told a news conference that the decision to migrate from analogue to digital was part of the conditions of the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA). TCRA has directed that analogue broadcasting should end on December 31, this year.

"The move to switch those regions to digital came after the TCRA's directive that is mandatory for Television broadcasting to be converted from analogue to digital format before December 31, 2012," he said. He listed the regions as Mwanza, Mbeya, Dodoma, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Tanga and Dar es Salaam - while Morogoro will be added in the group in he near future.

He further noted that for the past two months, Star Times was celebrating an official anniversary of launching digital services in Tanzania. He said the firm has reduced by 44 per cent the price of decoders from 70,000/- to 39,000/-. He, however, noted that the promotion ends on October 15.
