BBC Worlwide Chanels celebrate a sucessful 2012 in South Africa

2012 marked another successful year for BBC Worldwide s channels in South Africa   BBC Entertainment, BBC Lifestyle, BBC Knowledge and CBeebies. With its unique mix of the best of British programming coupled with unique global TV events and local commissions, our share of commercial viewing has increased by 5.7% (year on year)   resulting in our portfolio having the highest commercial share out of all international broadcasters (4.5% ) on DStvi amongst adults

BBC Lifestyle s raft of exclusive programming from fresh new culinary talent and superstar chefs, continued to be a recipe for success with South African viewers, with the channel consistently ranking as the number one lifestyle channel on DStv despite tough competition.   The Great British Bake Off proved to be very popular with audiences, serving up an increase in the time slot average by 62% vs. the previous three months and averaging up to 80,000 viewers for the semi-final. The sequins, tiaras and ten-foot trains from Big Fat Gypsy Weddings also proved to be a big draw reaching a phenomenal 1.4 million viewers over the course of the series.

In 2012, despite fierce competition BBC Entertainment ranked as the number 2 international channel among Premium individuals on DStv.   The popularity of the irrepressible Top Gear team in South Africa shows no sign of waning as the Top Gear India Special was the top performing programme on the channel for 2012 reaching an average of 170,000+viewers making BBC Entertainment the number 1 international channel during its broadcast.

BBC Entertainment also had incredible success in 2012 with the return of Come Dine With Me South Africa.  This locally commissioned version of the hit rating TV show reached 120,000 viewers on average per episode.

BBC Entertainment continued to be the destination of choice for South African viewers on a Sunday Night during 2012 with popular favourites such as Downton Abbey and Strictly Come Dancing.  The multi award winning Downton Abbey series 2, which premiered on Sunday night's, boosted the channel s timeslot share by 270% during its broadcast , consistently making BBC Entertainment the number 1international general entertainment channel.

Global TV events also proved a ratings boost. The London Calling season which celebrated the history, people and Culture of the UK s capital city over a two month period and included broadcasts from Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations was a huge success for BBC Knowledge, generating a 216% uplift in audiences compared to the channel average.

Little learners are also flocking to CBeebies for firm favourites such as Mister Maker and new original commissions such as the BAFTA nominated children s series Andy's Wild Adventures. CBeebies is the second highest growing children's channel among kids aged 4-15 comparing the first half of 2012 to the latter half of the year to date.

South African viewers are promised a diverse and exciting schedule in 2013   including the eagerly anticipated return of global favourites like Top Gear series 19, series 3 of the multi award winning Downton Abbey and critically acclaimed new drama Call The Midwife on BBC Entertainment.

BBC Lifestyle will continue to deliver exclusive access to some of the best British talent around with shows such as Ramsay's Ultimate Cookery, the return of The Great British Bake Off for a second series, as well as original commissions including Food and Drink.

BBC Knowledge promises exciting new original commissions such as Stargazing and Dara O Briain's Science Club along with the beautifully shot wildlife documentary Africa narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

CBeebies viewers can look forward to innovative and engaging programming with the return of BAFTA nominated Andy's Wild Adventures, the medallion-wearing crime-fighter Rastamouse and pre-schooler's favourite Mr Bloom's Nursery.
