Tanzania: Dar es Salaam Benefits From Digital Migration

Technology & Convergence

The transition from analogue to digital broadcasting technology in Tanzania has started to accrue benefits since it was decided to migrate in phases from last December.

The Minister for Communication, Science and Technology, Professor Makame Mbarawa revealed over the weekend in Dar es Salaam when talking to a delegation from Zambia who visited the ministry to learn how Tanzania successfully migrated to the digital system.

The minister told the delegation that was headed by the Zambian Deputy Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr Mwansa Kapeya that the digital system's benefits are huge for any country's development.

"We are witnessing a lot of benefits after embracing this technology," the minister said, adding that there is now quality voice and pictures in TV broadcasting in the country and even remote parts of the country can now easily get good reception of channels as compared to the earlier analogue system. He said that other benefits include the increase of programmes, though minimally so far.

"Our neighbours have come to learn from our successes," Prof Mbarawa said. He said that thus far Tanzania is the only country in the East African Community (EAC) region that has successfully managed to migrate from analogue to digital. On his part, Minister Kapeya commended Tanzania for the efforts done and said that his team has learnt a lot.

"We are in the process to do the same that is why we have come to learn from Tanzania's experience, and we have learnt a lot," he said. He said that come 2015, Zambia should have migrated from analogue to digital as per the Southern Africa Development Cooperation (SADC) countries agreement.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, Dr Florens Turuka said that the government's success in the matter was due to good relations among all stakeholders involved in the process. He told the Zambian delegation that education to citizens and a wide range involvement of various stakeholders is crucial in succeeding to migrate to digital technology.
