Zuku: Top quality Swahili content broadcast across East Africa
Zuku, the Wananchi Group’s triple play and pay-tv business, has announced the launch of a channel dedicated to showing movies in Swahili, one of the fastest growing languages in the world. This means that top quality Swahili content is broadcast to audiences across the East African region.
The Swahili language is spoken by over 35 million people, with the majority of speakers located in the East African cradle of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. All movies will be broadcast with English subtitles and include films across genres such as Comedy, Action, Drama and Romance.
Zuku Swahili Movies is the latest addition to the bouquet of proprietary Zuku-branded channels that includes Zuku Afrika (general entertainment), Zuku Life (documentary & factual entertainment) Zuku Movies Max, Gold, Action and Family and Zuku Sports. All of these were launched in late 2010, and have made their way to the top of the most-viewed ratings on the pay-tv platform.
Hannelie Bekker, Managing Director of Wananchi Programming, says: “For us the point of investing in the development and management of our own channels is the ability to differentiate our positioning in a competitive market. After years of Nollywood dominance East Africa is fast becoming a hub for the production of indigenous movies and we are really excited to be able to bring this rich content to audiences both in our region and beyond.”
