Online video player for SA TV planned
Sentech is working on a way for South Africans to stream television content online similar to the BBC iPlayer that is available to residents of the United Kingdom.
The CEO of Sentech, Setumo Mohapi, said that they are following trends elsewhere in the world such as the UK and France, and would like to take South Africa to where those countries are. To achieve this, Sentech is developing a multi-media content distribution platform as part of its 2013–2016 roadmap, Mohapi explained.
The state-owned signal distributor has also joined NAPAfrica, Mohapi said, adding that their NAPAfrica peering forms a critical part of the infrastructure that’s going to be driving its multi-media content distribution platform.
Mohapi didn’t want to reveal much more detail about Sentech’s plans for an online video player, confirming that they have a URL registered, but saying that the website isn’t ready for public consumption yet.
By the end of this quarter (Q2 2013), Mohapi said they expect to be able to show some content.
