Sci-fi blockbuster about to be released: Blomkamp's “Elysium”
The newest trailer from Neil Blomkamp's latest sci-fi blockbuster show great promise. Fast-paced action and a suped-up Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley are just some of the great action scenes fans of Blomkamp can expect.
Here is the storyline ; In the year 2154 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth, a wasteland where the impoverished are controlled by police robots and a degrading social system.
Secretary Rhodes, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Matt Damon plays the lead character Max, a man who needs to get to Elysium for a cure and has to fight the mayor of Elysium, played by Jodie Foster, to get there. Copley plays some demented half-man-half-machine villain following the orders of the mayor.
Elysium, due for release in South Africa on 30 August 2013, will also be shown at IMAX theatres and the latest poster for it has just been released.
NME reports that the movie had a budget of $210m, about seven times more than Blomkamp's District 9 budget, which became an international success for South African films.
Blomkamp is already set to start production on his next film, Chappie, which is rumoured to star Die Antwoord's Ninja and Yo-landi and will be set in South Africa. Blomkamp has also hinted that it will be based on a short he made called Tetra Vaal.
