Zuku Pay TV commissions new drama series
Zuku, Wananchi Group’s cable and satellite Pay TV service provider is proud to announce the commission of a new drama series from Kenyan production house, Awali Entertainment Ltd.
Produced by award-winning writer and Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu and Rebecca Chandler, the new drama series is slated for broadcast in February 2014 on the general entertainment channel, Zuku Afrika.
The 12x24’ series will be written and directed by Wanuri Kahiu and production is scheduled to begin in August.
The new commission follows a call-to-action from Zuku earlier in the year for a series that must be highly marketable, entertaining and have a strong, unique selling point. Zuku received more than 60 proposals, from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa amongst others.
Hannelie Bekker, Managing Director of Wananchi Programming, says: “Investing in East African talent and content is of great importance to Zuku. This is our first foray into drama, and we are excited about the chance to bringing well-made, home grown programming to our audiences. We had a wonderful response to our call-to-action and received some great pieces of work. However, Awali's submission really stood out for us…it is distinctively Kenyan, and yet widely accessible and appealing.
Wanuri Kahiu, Writer and Director, Awali Entertainment Ltd. adds: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with the Zuku team on their first dramatic series production. We are equally as excited to be able to collaborate with the many talented professionals that are the Kenyan film industry. Awali has been put in the unique position of developing a compelling drama that challenges the core of people's ambition. It questions the lengths people will go to in order to maintain power and position in a world plagued by corruption and scandal. The character driven plot is rife with intriguing story twists, suspense and is bound to resonate with Zuku's audience."
Awali is working with writers Cajetan Boy, Mungai Kiroga, and Wacuka Mungai, three pedigree writers who have a series of television shows and feature films under their belts.
Zuku is seeking to commission its second documentary series for broadcast on Zuku Life, the only documentary channel produced. The closing date for submissions is 16 August2013.
