DTT in South Africa: SABC will not support conditional access

Regulation & Policy

The South African Broadcasting Corporation has announced that it will not support conditional access of set-top boxes for its DTT service.

The new service will provide television channels SABC 1, 2, 3, as well as the 24-Hour News Channel, which is presently being broadcast on DStv channel 404.
“This was not a decision taken lightly and all sides of the matter had to be carefully considered,” says Lulama Mokhobo, group chief executive officer.

“However at the end of the day, whatever we do as a public service broadcaster, we must ensure that it is in the interest of the public and we believe that having no conditional access will mean that no South African can ever be denied their right to access of broadcasting services in this country.”

The SABC said the infrastructure and content for the launch of its DTT service was in place.
