Zuku hires Turner exec
African triple-play pay TV operator Zuku has poached a Turner Broadcasting System exec to become its chief commercial officer.
Charles Murito was TBS’s director, business development, Africa and the Middle East but will now join the Wananchi Group-owned paycaster as CCO of Wananchi Programming.
Wananchi said the move signaled “the company’s dedication to the monetisation of its assets and future growth”.
Murito is credited with launching Cartoon Network Arabia and overseeing TBS business strategy for Africa and the Middle East. He is a former Warner Bros. Entertainment and MTV Networks (aka Viacom International Media Networks) exec.

Last met at AfricaCast 2013, Pierre van der Hoven, Founder and CEO at Tuluntulu, explained to Balancing Act that Tuluntulu has unique technology for streaming video to Android mobile devices in low bandwidth or congested environments. The platform was developed by the CSIR ( www.csir.co.za ) specifically for the Africa / developing country environment. The unique characteristic is that video streaming works on EDGE at below 50kbps. This not only ensures an unbroken video stream, but also reduces the cost (data consumption) to the end user. The "Tuluntulu" app. can be downloaded from the Google Play Store to any Android device (phone or tablet) running V4.0 or later to test it.
This technology should unlock video streaming as an industry in the developing world. There are obvious applications for distributing "TV" channels, or creating new mobile TV channel. There is more information on its website. Extracted from this market report on VoD in Africa
