Helmer Porteus Xandau’s animated pic “Hillbrow” explores the conflict that has arisen in South Africa over efavirenz, one of the antiretroviral medications formulated to treat AIDS that is now being used as a hallucinogenic recreational drug. Offering a dramatized look at urban South Africa, the film explores a reality that is not well known outside of the country.
