FOX International Channels Africa kicks Off 2015 With Seven Brand New Shows!

FOX International Channels Africa will be offering great viewing in 2015 with several first-run shows directly from Twentieth Century Fox in the US, headlined by star-studded hip-hop drama, Empire.

FIC Africa are happy to announce the addition of seven new shows to FOX and FOX Crime’s line-ups in 2015.

First up is The Strain, a vampire-themed series by Academy Award nominated film maker, Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim), premiering on FOX (DStv channel 125) on 9 February at 20:30. Paired with and preceding the much-anticipated return of The Walking Dead (9 February at 21:20), this makes a not-to-be missed horror double bill on Monday nights.

Adding even more lustre to Wednesday nights will be the star-studded hip-hop centered drama series, Empire (starting 4 March at 21:00 – double billed), with Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson as leads.  Empire, is a collaboration between Academy Award nominated director/producer Lee Daniels (The Butler) and Emmy Award winning writer Danny Strong, with all the music created and supervised by Timbaland, Empire is one not to miss! According to Entertainment Weekly when the show premiered in the US on 8 January, its viewership was almost 10 million. “(Its) a number that's nothing to be scoffed at. Its rating in the key demographic of 18-49-year-old viewers was a 3.8, enough to tie How to Get Away with Murder for the top debut of the season. It was the highest rated debut for Fox since Touch in 2012.” The show has received fairly positive reviews as well with critics seeing lots of potential for seasons to come. The New York Times said, “Empire has prestige, great music and gifted actors, but it is what it appears to be: “Dynasty” in the age of hip-hop.”

Expect a big night in and on the couch on 12 March for the premiere of two comedies – Fresh off the Boat at 20:10 and You’re the Worst at 21:00. Based on celebrity chef Eddie Huang’s memoir of the same name, Fresh off the Boat centers on Eddie’s childhood moving from Washington DC’s Chinatown to Orlando where his father bought a cowboy-themed steakhouse.

And for those seeking comedy with a bit more bite, You’re the Worst, from producer Stephen Falk, the man behind the highly acclaimed Orange is the New Black and Weeds; centers on the relationship of narcissist Jimmy Shive-Overly and stubborn cynic Gretchen Cutler who is certain amorous bonds aren’t her thing.

May will also see the launch of the highly anticipated Wayward Pines on the 14th at 21:25, a mind-bending 10-episode event thriller by M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense) starring Matt Dillon and Carla Gugino.

Tyrant a drama series that offers an intriguing mix of family dynamics and Middle East politics, will premiere in June.

FOX Crime (DStv channel 126) has two new shows in the first half of the year for fans of quality crime drama.

Backstrom which launches on 5 March at 21:20 comes from Hart Hanson, creator of Fox megahit Bones. A darkly humorous crime drama, Rainn Wilson (The Office) stars as Everett Backstrom, a cop whose self-destructive tendencies and anti-social behaviour are mitigated only by his utter brilliance as a detective.  June will see the start of the procedural drama series Legends, starring Sean Bean, also on FOX Crime.

“The acquisition of this large number of first run series is a milestone for Fox and Fox Crime Africa” says Hannelie Bekker Managing Director, FOX International Channels Africa.  “Each of these shows comes with excellent credentials and offers fresh and bold entertainment. A few of them – The Strain, Tyrant, You’re The Worst and Legends - have already been renewed for further seasons, which means they will delight audiences not only in 2015, but also in years to come.”

Hannelie adds that this is part of a three year volume deal, meaning more new shows for the next three years from Twentieth Century Fox that will include four drama series and two comedies.
