Benin gets loan for digital broadcast transition

The West African Development Bank has approved a loan of XOF 35.5 billion for Benin to assist in the transition to digital broadcasting. The loan to the government of Benin is backed by BOA Benin, Ecobank Benin, Banque Atlantique Benin and BGFI Bank Benin.

The bank noted that while Benin did not meet the ITU deadline of 17 June for the transition, it has already taken the first steps in the migration from analogue to digital, including reinforcing broadcast capacity, deploying infrastructure and passing legislation on digital terrestrial TV.

In addition to digital TV, the loan will support developing regional broadband infrastructure and mobile coverage in sub-regions.
