Gauteng Launches Local TV Station

Broadcast

A new Gauteng TV channel debuted on MultiChoice’s DStv satellite pay-TV platform this October.

GauTV made its debut on DStv on 19 October this year. The channel is based in the heart of Johannesburg and aims to depict life in Gauteng through a range of thought-provoking and entertaining shows.

Zallywood Productions heads up the channel’s production, and hopes to become the voice of the financial province – from Sandton’s glamorous lifestyles to township stories and prominent individuals. GauTV will cover the greater province and will join the existing community TV station Soweto TV, a station rapidly growing in popularity to surpass even SABC3 on certain viewership rating metrics over the last few years.

GauTV will help fill the void after community station Alex TV (lx tv) was abruptly taken off the air by ICASA after its broadcast license expired. The 12-hour schedule will include news, sport, soap operas, drama, movies, and factual and documentary programming among other things. It will broadcast in a variety of languages including English, Afrikaans, Setswana, Pedi, Venda, Tsonga and Zulu.

“We look forward to delivering a quality TV channel filled with great entertainment for DStv customers,” Dr. Victor Phume, Zallywood Productions’ Founder told Channel24. “We hope to showcase fresh new talent alongside established household names. We look forward to telling the unique stories of the people of Gauteng.”

The channel will broadcast exclusively on DStv and will be available on DStv Premium, DStv Extra, DStv Compact, DStv Family and DStv Access bouquets.
