Gabon launches 24-hour news channel
The first Gabonese news channel, Gabon 24, was launched Tuesday in Libreville with the ambition to offer a “quality television” on national and international news, three months before the presidential elections.
The new French channel is a subsidiary of public service group Gabon Television, and will be broadcast on the Canal Plus bouquet Africa.
President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who attended the grand opening of the new channel, said: “This is within the project that was ours to be able to enrich the Gabonese audiovisual landscape, which we hope it can enrich with other thematic channels, but mostly what we want is quality television.”
“Whether this happens three months to the presidential election, I would say good for all candidates who will have the opportunity to reach a much larger audience and thus to share the programme and ambitions they may have and the other for Gabon,” President Ali Bongo Ondimba said.
The direction of the channel aims to provide a comprehensive treatment of African and International news.
“Viewers will have on Gabon 24 a continuous daily schedule. Gabon 24 is willing to give credibility to the information of Gabon television group and therefore the goal here is to show that we can be professional,“Louis Philippe Mbadinga, Gabon 24 editor said.
The first edition of 20 hours of broadcast was generally well conducted, however, there have been some blunders, largely technical, according to AFP.
