African talk show The Scoop hits 100 shows but despite good audiences, still needs a sponsor

African talk show The Scoop has gone from strength to strength in audience terms. But like a lot of good African TV programmes, it struggles to find a sponsor. Russell Southwood spoke to the show’s creator Salim Amin, Africa24 Media about reaching 100 shows and what’s coming up in season nine.

Every independent TV producer launching a pan-African TV programme faces the same dilemma. Few African free-to-air TV stations have the budget to commission a programme series. Without a commissioner, the producer needs sponsorship. To get sponsorship you need to demonstrate that you can get audiences. Without data, it’s hard to show what audiences there are.

The Scoop has got beyond this point because with 100 programmes made and it’s got beyond the “where’s the audience?” stage. You can see it on a long list of stations: Vox Africa, Voice of America, TVC (Nigeria), MTV (Malawi), ITV (Tanzania), Zuku and KTN (Kenya), CBC (Zambia) and NBC (Namibia). In addition, it gets aired on two significant radio stations: East FM (Kenya) and Africa FM (out of Kenya).

It has a significant online presence and is carried on the following websites: Africa.com; Capital FM (Kenya), Dot Africa TV, AllAfrica.com and a number of others:”We’ve accumulated about 150,000 view per week and we send out information to the 11,000 people who like our Facebook page.”

But sponsors still need proof of audiences:”We’ve paid for GeoPoll data for Kenya which shows that we have a 1.5 million weekend audience for the show. Elsewhere we don’t have the data. GeoPoll have started working across the continent but it’s very expensive (to do every country). We still don’t have a sponsor. People are interested but nobody’s signed up yet. We’re taking it out to market again.”

The Scoop has a very simple but successful format. The interview is asked questions that cover four areas: childhood, career, thoughts on leadership in Africa; and their future plans. In the case of career and leadership, Amin asks what advice they would give to young Africans: for example, what do they think is a rising area to look for a job in? ICT? Agriculture?

The Scoop in question is the final reveal of the interview:”I ask them to tell me something the world (perhaps even family and friends) doesn’t know about them. A lot of the things I’m told are funny.”

Past interviewees have included: Dr Richard Leakey (Kenya); Dr Kandeh Yumkella (Sierra Leone, running for President); Zarina Patel (magazine publisher, Kenya);

Hendrina Doroba (Zambia); Kanini Mutooni (Kenya); Wanjala Wafula (Kenya); Dr Sandy Pillay (South Africa); and Abbas Gullet (Kenya). Interviews coming up include more titans of industry like Bob Collymore and Chris Kirubi and innovators like Sofia Bekele and Juliana Rotich.

In addition, it will be doing a three part special on one of Kenya’s leading musical acts Sauti Sol. Amin will be sitting down and finding out how two journalists, an accountant and a scientist became Africa’s hottest boy band. Part One tells you why Willis is not the best person to trust with money.

“We used to chase guests, now they’re phoning us saying can they be on the show. We’d like to get a sponsor to use their contribution to interview people outside of those who are either in or come to Nairobi. I’d like to do 20-30 shows from Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt.”

100…it’s a big number for age…a small number of words…a medium number for French fries.  For many it is a time to measure success.  It’s a significant number for a cricket batsman.  It makes water hit its boiling point.  The first 100 days in office for most leaders is a signal of their success in office.
